How to make a fried plantain
I.
Ingredients
·
Six ripe plantains
·
Cooking oil for frying
·
A pinch of salt
II.
Preparing plantains
a)
Use a well-sharpened knife to
cut the two ends of the ripe plantain. Cut a longitudinal slit along the
plantain and through the inner side to ease peeling. Chop the peeled plantains
crosswise into thin slices on a cutting board.
b)
Pour approximately 2 cups of
vegetable cooking oil into a skillet or a non-stick frying pan. Heat the oil
thoroughly until it is hot enough to sputter when a slice is dropped into the oil.
c)
Fry the plantain slices in the
already hot oil until the color changes golden and the slices become tender.
Cook for about 5 minutes (Fuster, 2017). When they are ready,
transfer the slices using a skimmer into a towel-lined paper to drain the oil.
d)
Put the fried plantains in
salted water in a bowl. Shake a little then remove the slices. The process
softens the slices and makes them creamy on the inside.
e)
Smash the pieces of the fried
plantains using the backside of a spoon or spatula. The smashing helps to
reduce their thickness and enable further frying.
f)
Put the smashed slices in
batches in the hot oil in the fryer and fry until the slices turn golden brown.
Turn the slices in the oil to prevent them from sticking on the sides. Once
ready, remove them from the pan
g)
Serve as a side dish or a
snack. You can also put the fried plantains in an air-tight container for more
than ten days (Fuster, 2017).
In
conclusion, fried plantains are nutritious and sweet. It has the fruit content
as well as a meal.
