Description of Today’s Job Market
The
modern job market is correctly described by competition. This is because the
world has become a global village of qualified experts and to survive the
cutthroat competition, a job seeker needs to stand out and make a lasting
impression to increasingly choosy employers. An individual should possess
personal qualities as well as intrapersonal competencies and thus making them
an attractive employee (Jobs & Pylayev, 2014). The focus of this paper is
to describe the qualities that make an individual successful in today’s
competitive job market.
To
be successful in today’s job market requires hard skills which are in essence
the academic qualifications for the career or profession of choice. The
educational system offers the right training and knowledge in a particular
discipline. The attainment of a certain level of education such as Diploma
qualifies an individual for a specific position. The accumulation of hard
skills opens an individual to more chances in the job market and also improves
their competitiveness (Jobs & Pylayev, 2014). Today’s job market is savage for the
inexperienced but for the well trained, savvy individuals it is a smooth ride.
Besides
the academic qualifications, the job market demands a specific set of
behavioral and attitudinal competencies. These qualities are necessary for an
individual to remain relevant in the job market. These include a basic
understanding and know-how of technology. The incorporation of technology and
the internet in the modern corporate and public space has led to an increase in
productivity for employees as well as companies (Half, 2018). For example, computer literacy is an added advantage
for modern job seekers since most communication in the workplace is technology
enabled. Technology tools such as cloud
storage services are used in information storage and sharing within an organization.
Another
set of interpersonal skills crucial for the workplace include problem-solving
skills which are a means to prepare the individual for the unexpected issues within
the organization. The world is rapidly globalized and so is the workplace and
for the firm to succeed the competition in the market place, the employees
should be prepared to solve any unexpected contingencies (Jobs & Pylayev,
2014). Thus, to be successful, an
individual should offer practical solutions to problems which are likely to be encountered
in the workplace.
Also,
the modern workplace is a place for teams, and thus an individual should be
able to collaborate and coordinate successfully with other employees or members
of a group. Today’s workplace is designated with special teams with specific
work tasks. To be successful, an individual should exhibit personal traits such
as tolerance, respect and other attributes necessary for a functional group or
a team. According to Jobs and Pylayev (2014),
as part of a team, an individual is expected to provide encouragement, leadership
skills, and direction towards the team goals.
Today’s
workplace requires a certain amount of adjustability and adaptability for the
individual to fit in the organization. The quality of versatility makes an
individual successful since they are dynamic and impromptu in the uptake of
roles and responsibilities. This quality means that an individual can switch
gears to meet the organizational changes. For example, the ability to adjust to
different positions, projects within an organization is essential since it
makes an individual indispensable (Half, 2018).
The aspect of adaptability
ensures the success of an individual by enabling career changes which are smart
and necessary given the level of competition in the global workspace. The
quality of versatility goes hand in hand with the multitasking ability which
ensures a complete balance between workplace roles. To remain functional and relevant in the modern workplace is an
added advantage for any employee.
Also,
an individual requires a great deal of planning experience and personal
discipline to remain relevant and competitive in today’s workplace. A good
planner needs extensive training and experience to make workable schedules for
the workplace. Also, the ability to maintain optimism in the workplace is an essential
trait for the modern job seeker. The aspect of confidence ensures positive
vibes and well-being in the organization. A successful individual maintains a positive
attitude which in turn infects the rest of the workplace, thus making it more
conducive, less stressful and a happy place for all (Half, 2018). Positive
attitudes in the workplace enhance the level of productivity, and thus a positive
individual is an asset in the social and productive aspect of any organization.
Most
organizations rely on communication in the implementation of the goals. The
aspect of the disclosure is essential for the general wellbeing of an organization.
Being a good communicator ensures the success of an individual in today’s workplace
since they can express themselves clearly. Communication entails talking,
listening and written form of passing information (Jobs & Pylayev, 2014). The use of different languages in contact is
crucial since it determines the success of an individual or organization to
communicate to the necessary stakeholders.
Conclusion
There are a variety of qualities that will
make an individual successful in today's job market, and they can either be
personal or organization based traits. These qualities determine career success
or failure in a somewhat competitive world and ever-changing labor market. An individual’s academic qualifications are
not enough to place them at the peak. The modern workplace requires all-round
individuals who exhibit strong interpersonal skills and other qualities.
